What's On In Edinburgh
Edinburgh plays host to a number of popular and even famous festivals and events each year:
Hogmanay
Edinburgh is known for its elaborate and expansive New Year celebrations which occur from December 29 until January 1 each year. The four days see music, dance, events and street theatre which attract some of the biggest crowds around the world for this end of year extravaganza. Needless to say, a mass of fireworks rocket into the sky when the clocks hit midnight to welcome in the New Year in hope of good times to come.
Edinburgh Military Tattoo
The annual military tattoo occurs outside the city’s castle and is a highlight of the British Armed Forces calendar. It takes place in August each year and is part of the wider Edinburgh festival (see below). International military bands, pipes and drums are the order of the day as the pomp and ceremony of the military comes to the fore. More than 200,000 people visit the city to watch the festivities take place.
Edinburgh International Festival
Each year the Edinburgh International Festival strikes up in the middle of August and continues through until the first week of September. The festival brings together opera, dance, music and other entertainment which take place in the city’s six main concert halls and theatres as well as in some of the smaller venues. The first festival took place in 1947 with a view to providing ‘a platform for the flowering of the human spirit’.
